Our Story

When was Milam Mules established? That’s a hard question to answer.

When something runs this deep in your blood, where do you really begin? Is it at birth? With your parents? Your grandparents? Or the generations before them? If that’s the case, there’s no telling when this story truly started.

Milam Mules isn’t just a business. It’s family.

For generations, mules have been woven into our family’s way of life. Long before modern equipment, they helped build farms, worked cotton fields, served in the military, packed hunters into the mountains, and carried people through places where nothing else could. They’re more than livestock, they’re a symbol of grit, dependability, and heart.

A mule is one of God’s most unique creations. Bred from a horse and a donkey, they combine the athletic ability and rideability of a horse with the strength, endurance, and surefootedness of a donkey. The result is an animal unlike any other, intelligent, hardworking, and loyal enough to become a lifelong partner. Appreciating what makes each one special.

The photograph you’ll see from the 1930s tells part of that story. Those are members of our family who handled and trained mules for large operations during a time when mules powered America. In one summer alone, they trained and sold more than 3,000 colts. Think about what that meant... the amount of mares pregnant, the years of planning, the countless hours in the saddle. Mules have always been an investment, not just financially, but in time, patience, and trust.

Today, Milam Mules proudly calls Southeast Missouri home. We’ve been blessed to sell mules across the United States and beyond, including Hawaii, Canada, Israel, Colorado, and many places in between. While we continue to offer mules we’ve personally raised, trained, or put our own hands on, we’ve also expanded into hosting our annual Select Mule Sale.

Each year, around 50 carefully selected mules from respected consignors across the country come together in the Show-Me State, where the mule is the state animal. Every mule is chosen for the qualities that matter most, rideability, packability, disposition, soundness, and trustworthiness. Our goal is simple, offer quality mules that we’d be proud to own ourselves.

Our experience doesn’t stop with mules. Years spent in this industry have taught us what works and what doesn’t, which is why we also offer custom-built tack and high-quality leather goods designed by people who actually use them.

Whether you’re looking for your next trail partner, a dependable pack mule, quality tack, or simply enjoy talking mules, we’d love to visit with you.

Welcome to Milam Mules. Where heritage, hard work, and good mules still matter.

Mule life for life, Brock Milam.
